How We Make Cavities Disappear

Woman receiving dental fillings

Also known as tooth decay or caries, dental cavities are one of the most common dental problems. A cavity is a permanently damaged area on the hard surface of your tooth that creates a tiny hole. They may be caused by a combination of factors, including poor oral hygiene, bacteria in your mouth, and consumption of sugary drinks and foods.

Fillings are the go-to option when cavities have reached the dentin (the layer beneath the enamel of your teeth). They can also be used to restore teeth that are cracked, broken, or worn down from conditions such as grinding or clenching. You can learn more about dental fillings from our Jersey City, NJ dentist on this page.

How are Cavities Treated?

To treat a cavity, Dr. Vahid will remove the decayed area of your tooth and fill it with an amalgam or composite resin material. First, he will use a local anesthetic to numb the tooth and surrounding tissues. Once the area is nice and numb, an air abrasion instrument, drill, or laser is used to remove the decayed portion of the tooth. When all of the decay has been removed, Dr. Vahid will clean the area of bacteria and debris. After your tooth is filled, he will smooth, finish, and polish the restoration.

Amalgam Fillings

Commonly known as silver fillings, amalgam fillings have been used in dentistry for more than 100 years. They are a safe, effective option. They are made from a combination of metals, including silver, tin, mercury, and copper. Often used to treat larger areas of decay, they are extremely durable and can last for up to 15 years.

Composite Resin Fillings

More aesthetically pleasing than silver fillings, composite resin fillings bond firmly to tooth surfaces and are designed to match the shade of your tooth. They are durable, can be used on front or back teeth, and are an excellent choice for people who prefer a more natural look. Resistant to fracturing when used for small to medium-sized cavities, composite resin fillings are also effective for repairing and restoring broken, chipped, or worn teeth.
