If you suffer from tooth loss, dental implants are the most popular solution. However, you may need a sinus lift to continue with your treatment. Your mouth is interconnected with the other structures within your face and when there are issues in one area, they can complicate others. In the case of dental implants, a sinus lift can help shape the necessary environment for your procedure to be successful. Continue reading to learn what a sinus lift is, why it’s necessary, and what the process looks like.

What Is a Sinus Lift?

A sinus lift, also known as sinus augmentation, is a surgical procedure that adds bone to the upper jaw near your molars and premolars. This material is placed between your jaw and the maxillary sinuses (air-filled spaces above your upper teeth). To make room for this new bone, your sinus membrane is gently lifted—hence the name of the procedure.

Why Would I Need a Sinus Lift?

A sinus lift is generally necessary when there isn’t enough bone in your upper jaw to support an implant fixture. However, there could be several reasons why the procedure becomes a critical part of your treatment plan, including:

  • Resorption: Over time, tooth loss can cause your jawbone to shrink due to a lack of stimulation from the root. The more teeth you lose, the more prominent this shrinkage becomes.
  • Protect Your Sinuses: The maxillary sinuses are very close to your upper jaw, leaving little room for implant placement in some patients. A sinus lift keeps these sensitive membranes out of harm’s way during your surgery.
  • Natural Anatomy: Some people naturally have thinner jawbones or larger sinus cavities, making a sinus lift necessary for proper support.

Without the right structure, dental implants may not integrate into your jawbone properly, leading to instability or failure. A sinus lift addresses this issue, creating a sturdy environment for success!

What Does the Sinus Lift Process Look Like?

So, what happens during the procedure, exactly?  Here’s how your dentist will handle it:

  • Step 1: Make a small incision in your gum tissue to expose the jawbone.
  • Step 2: Create an opening in the bone to get to your sinuses.
  • Step 3: Gently lift the sinus membrane upward.
  • Step 4: Add bone graft material to the space, increasing the bone height and density.
  • Step 5: Close the incision with sutures.

The healing process typically takes a few months as the grafted bone fuses into your natural jawbone. Once healed, your jaw will be ready for implant placement!

If your dentist recommends a sinus lift, it’s because they want your dental implants to succeed. While it may feel like an unnecessary extra step, going through with it could mean the difference between success and failure! If you still have reservations, talk to your dentist. They can walk you through the procedure to put your mind at ease.
