What Is Crown Lengthening?
How Is The Procedure Performed? At AV Dental Associates, our experienced periodontist and knowledgeable dental team can help you improve your oral health and enhance your smile. Crown lengthening is a periodontal treatment that exposes tooth structure when there is not enough exposed tooth to successfully support a dental crown or bridge. It also can be used as a cosmetic treatment to improve a “gummy smile.”
Before our periodontist begins the crown lengthening procedure, he will numb the area with a local anesthetic. He will then remove a small amount of gum tissue, contouring it to create a beautiful, even smile. If needed, he will gently remove bone tissue to ensure that enough tooth is exposed to properly place a crown.
After the procedure is completed, the area is cleaned and the gum tissue is sutured. The length of the procedure depends on the complexity of the individual case but can often be completed in an hour or so. If both bone and soft tissue need to be removed, the procedure will take longer.
Recovery and Healing
It is important to treat the surgery site with care after any surgical procedure. Do not eat or drink anything until the local anesthesia wears off to avoid biting or burning the inside of your mouth or tongue. Eat soft foods and avoid brushing the gums in the area. Removing debris with a device such as a Water Pik is very effective for cleaning the area.
You will return to our office in 7 to 10 days to have the area checked and your stitches removed. If you are having a permanent crown placed, your gums will need to heal for about three months before the tooth is prepared for the final crown. In the meantime, your dentist can place a temporary crown to protect your tooth. Some patients experience hot and cold sensitivity after surgery. This is due to the roots of the teeth being exposed, but tooth sensitivity should subside as your gums heal.
