Crown and Bridge Aftercare

Eating & Drinking

If you have received a permanent bridge or crown, you may eat or drink 60 minutes after it is cemented. Avoid hot drinks and wait until the local anesthesia wears off before eating so you don’t burn yourself or bite the inside of your mouth, lips or tongue.crown and bridge aftercare in Jersey City NJ - A V Dental Associates

Avoid sticky, hard or crunchy foods for at least 24 hours. After 24 hours, you may eat and drink normally. If have any tenderness or sensitivity in the area, eat a soft diet for the first few days. Rinsing with warm salt water can ease discomfort and aid healing.

If you have received a temporary crown, it is essential to avoid eating anything sticky, hard or crunchy so the crown does not come out while you’re waiting for your permanent crown. Treat the area of your mouth with care and chew on the other side of your mouth if possible.

Discomfort & Swelling

It is normal to have mild discomfort and swelling around a new bridge or crown. You may experience some tenderness or sensitivity in the area for the first few weeks while your gums heal and your tooth adjusts to the permanent bridge or crown. Anti-inflammatory over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen can help ease discomfort and swelling. If you experience pain when you bite down, your crown or bridge may be too high. Call our office and come in for a quick adjustment as soon as a possible.

Brushing & Flossing

The teeth underneath your bridge or crown still can develop decay, so it is essential to be vigilant about maintaining good oral hygiene. Brush for two minutes twice a day and floss daily. For the first few days, use caution when flossing. Slide the floss between your teeth, but instead of pulling up, pull it out horizontally to avoid dislodging the crown. After a few days, you can resume normal flossing.

To clean your bridge, use a dental floss threader between the teeth and gently slide it in a front and back motion underneath the bridge to loosen any food particles or plaque. A water pick also works well. Rinsing with mouthwash when you’re done brushing and flossing will help keep the area clean.
